1.Why did you choose hip-hop dance and what kind of hip-hop dance style are you pursuing?
When I first saw a B-Boy do a “Flare” I was automatically impressed and ever since then, I had wanted to learn to B-Boy. After learning how to B-Boy, I learnt various other dance styles. “Jerking” happened to be a trend when I was in middle school and then the whole “Hit Dem Folks” movement was in trend around when I had graduated high school, and soon after came “The Woah”. I have love for the culture and no matter what dance genre in hiphop there is, I will always respect all genres as I am lenient to learning all dance genres instead of just pursuing one.
2.Tell me why hip-hop as a culture matters. Why is it important?
It is important to realize how different people from different cultures perceive hiphop. I think a lot of people in Korea have a misperception on hiphop. Without understanding the culture behind hiphop, no matter how good you are at dancing or rapping, you will always be seen as trying to “imitate” something you are not. And that’s why I want to mention that “freestyle” is a big part of hiphop culture. Anyone could memorize a choreographed dance however, that shows you are not listening to the music and dancing. Are you dancing to the music according to those lyrics and beats? Or do you have your moves all planned out? Sure you can memorize moves that suit the lyrics and beat however, what about a song you’ve never heard before in a freestyle battle/cypher or a club? Can you catch the sequence of the beat to dance to the music? If you enjoy a song, you will automatically find rhythm in your body to dance to that certain song instead of always trying a certain choreographed dance. Be yourself. Be authentic as possible. Express yourself the way you want to and the way you feel.
